About How to Deal with Borderline Personality Disorder

In this episode, we will be discussing borderline personality disorder (BPD) and how to cope with having a family member, like a daughter or a sister, who struggles with this condition. Most importantly how to have hope. Hannah is an experienced therapist who has worked with many patients who suffer from BPD.

Borderline personality disorder is a mental health condition characterized by severe emotional regulation and identity problems. It often arises in individuals who have experienced traumatic events such as sexual abuse, neglect, or grew up in challenging environments, like having alcoholic parents. The disorder is more common in women and tends to manifest in thinking in black and white, idealizing others, difficulty maintaining long-term relationships, and a poor sense of self that fluctuates daily. Those with BPD may resort to self-harm, like cutting, as a way to cope with their overwhelming emotions.

Hannah shares her experiences with patients who have BPD and how challenging it can be to maintain a therapeutic relationship with them. The episode also delves into dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) as an effective treatment for BPD and how parents can use cognitive behavioral techniques to help their children cope with negative emotions and thoughts.

In our "Asking for a friend" segment, we discuss a fascinating case of Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos, who reportedly deepened her voice to sound more convincing and assertive in the business world. We explore the idea of using voice modulation for influence and whether it is an effective tactic. Tune in to discover Hannah's insights on this intriguing topic.
