About Unconscious Bias

In this episode we discuss the topic of unconscious biases and its relevance in today's society. We explore the implementation of implicit bias training by corporations to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

The conversation touches upon the Implicit Association Test (IAT), a computer-based test developed by Harvard University psychologists, which measures the strength of an individual's automatic associations between mental representations of objects and evaluations of those objects. However, there are concerns about the reliability and predictive power of the IAT, as well as the limited effectiveness of unconscious bias training in producing long-term behavior change or significant improvements in diversity outcomes.

We discuss the psychological perspective on biases, highlighting that unconscious biases are a natural consequence of human cognition and the brain's tendency to categorize information. We investigate the potential negative effects of bias training and emphasize the importance of open dialogue and exposure to diverse viewpoints for true diversity and understanding.
