I've commented elsewhere. Basically, Katy's claims that altruistic surrogates make money is as logical as saying all Americans make heaps of money when they go to hospital or have surgery... because hey, they get reimbursed thousands for out-of-pocket fees!!! Absolute idiocy, especially in a country like Australia with a public health system.
Disappointed in Hannah for swallowing this BS and her total lack of critical analytical skills. Totally destroys Katy's credibility - I know she's lied here, the whole video is probably riddled with lies, how would I know?
Please Hannah, use your critical analysis skills and don't switch them off just because someone says something that accords with your politics.
This analysis misses the most important parental attribute of "quality".
It's pretty obvious that good parenting is better than bad parenting no matter of marital gender and biology.
So each situation is necessarily different, impacted more by a difficult to grade "parental quality" measure that is understandably absent in the statistics.
When the primary influences on outcome are not taken into account, the resulting conclusion of any study is compromised.
I was struck by the fact that in places like Canada, being entitled to be termed a “parent” is something that the state defines and confers on you. It’s become nothing but a legal construct.
Katy makes interesting points, each of which can be disputed because she fails to compare the outcomes she claims against the outcomes of heterosexual couples. In any population, you will find a percentage of harm in children. She fails to prove that the actual percentage is higher than heterosexual couples. In fact, by sheer numerical statistics, she would find more bad parenting and more harmed children in the hetero population. I would like to see her turn the metric around and show what percentage of children across populations are faring better than their peers.
The problem lies not in the gender or sexual orientation of the parent but in the dysfunction of the parenting. Showing Tiktok videos of a few very well-known influencers sensationalizes her point, but can easily be countered by stories of well-adjusted kids in loving homes. She also doesn't account for the fact that children overall today (and their parents) are suffering more than ever from increasing divorce, increasing poverty, increasing social isolation, increasing pharma intervention, social media, etc. She doesn't individuate these factors in her analysis.
I agree with Katy and Hannah that our kids deserve better from all of us, but signaling all queer and infertile parents as if they are the reason is absurd. You can do better, Hannah.
Please forgive off topic comment Hannah, but someone else left a comment/ question on your recent post on cluster B. He wanted your professional opinion on his hypothesis that the pill mimics pregnancy, and therefore induces a permanent state of entitlement in women AND triggers men to appease women as if they are pregnant.
It blew my mind and I was hoping you'd give your thoughts :)
This was his original comment / question to you, in case you missed it...
Around 2010, they were comparing surrogacy to the "charity of organ donation", while interestingly the same people would NOT condemn commericalized surrogacy. None of those groups have advocated making the sale of womb rental illegal... as the sale of kidneys is illegal.
Nor have any of the surrogacy groups condemnded the fact that it's 1/5 the cost in India...
Bravo! What an incredible speaker Katy is.
Eye-opening and very thought-provoking, excellent discussion.
Katy is top notch, I'm actually using a ton of her material for my upcoming project which touches upon many cultural issues, well done!

A long-winded way of saying: “Don't let gay couples adopt kids”.
Genetic, Surrogate, and Social - now that’s a new take on the Trinity, innit…
(Stated so clearly, bet the whole conversation was great…)
